This landscape design in Barwon Heads by CMS Landscaping transforms a family home into a relaxed coastal retreat designed around outdoor living. Completed in 2025, the project combines a swimming pool, herringbone paving, timber decking and layered planting to create a strong connection between the home and garden. CMS Landscaping was responsible for the landscape design and construction, with Habitat Design contributing to the front garden design.
Coastal landscape design in Barwon Heads
The landscape has been planned as a series of connected outdoor spaces rather than separate garden zones. From the front garden through to the pool and entertaining areas, material choices, planting and clean lines establish a consistent contemporary coastal character.
The pool forms a central feature of the backyard. Limestone batons from Eco Outdoor have been laid in a herringbone pattern around the pool, creating subtle texture while maintaining the light, understated palette of the home. Frameless glass pool fencing provides the required separation without interrupting views across the garden, helping the outdoor area retain an open and spacious feel.
Natural materials and practical outdoor spaces
Flooded Gum decking creates a generous outdoor dining area that extends the living space beyond the house. The warmth of the timber works naturally alongside the pale limestone paving, while ironbark fencing introduces another durable timber element to the landscape.
Corten steel edging defines the garden beds and pathways, providing a warm contrast against the softer foliage and muted coastal planting palette. Throughout the garden, layered planting helps soften the architecture and hard landscaping. Established trees provide height and shade, while lower planting creates texture around paths, boundaries and entertaining areas.
The front garden takes a more naturalistic approach, combining gravel surfaces, stone, Corten steel edging and dense planting. The result complements the home’s contemporary architecture while creating an inviting transition from the street to the entrance.
A garden designed for coastal life
Every part of this Barwon Heads landscape has a practical purpose. There are areas for swimming, dining, relaxing and enjoying the garden, yet the overall design remains visually connected. Careful material selection and restrained detailing give the project its cohesive character.
The finished landscape demonstrates how thoughtful landscape design and construction can make outdoor areas an integral part of a coastal home. The combination of limestone paving, Flooded Gum decking, Corten steel edging, ironbark fencing, pool surrounds, glass fencing and considered planting creates the resort-like atmosphere envisioned for this family home.
